Meet Kent Bhupathi

Kent Bhupathi, The Honest Economist

Public discourse on the economy loves to treat the financial realities of families and businesses as if they were sporting outcomes, with savings and investments becoming little more than scores to cheer or boo. But, economics isn’t merely about numbers. It’s fundamentally about real people, their decisions and the everyday tradeoffs they must manage. And here at The Honest Economist, it’s that vibrant, human dimension of economics that drives every insight that’s shared.

While now based in rapidly growing Dallas, TX, with my wife and two highly opinionated collie-mixes, I have had the good fortune to live, study, and work across the globe—experiences that continue to inform my perspective on economies, markets, and the forces that shape human decision-making.

To me, economics is not some tidy set of solutions, but rather a refined lens that reveals the cost of every choice we either make or fail to make. And that lens is more than a career for me; it is a lifelong obsession forged through graduate study and honed by leading analytic teams that put theory to the test.

Throughout my career, I have held leadership roles in economic analysis and data science across a variety of sectors, including marketing, consumer goods, and professional services. Though often labeled a "quant," I see myself more broadly as an explorer of insights and a connector of ideas. And co-founding Market Theory in 2021 has trialed that philosophy against real-world scrutiny, while teaching at New York University has sharpened the clarity and precision with which I communicate. Together, these pursuits ensure that the obsession remains relevant and honest, providing the fuel for every essay, lecture, and conversation that follows.

As a thought leader, I focus on topics such as recessions, financial markets, macroeconomic trends, and household finance—aiming always to make complex concepts more accessible and relatable. But, far too much commentary around such continues to be obscured by complexity, bias, and privilege. And people deserve these topics to be explained with clarity and candor.

Perhaps it truly may be too much to ask… but, I frankly don't care! I insist on facts and accountability. Period.

However, calling out the nonsense is not an end in itself.

Ultimately, my mission here is to give people the confidence to act on their newfound understanding. Whether you are a business leader, an investor, a stay-at-home parent, or a curious student, you deserve to understand the economic forces around you.

The economy may be complex, but the decision-making does not have to be. I hope that my work helps you approach the future with optimism, no matter where you stand today.

Thanks for reading! My name is Kent Oliver Bhupathi -- The Honest Economist.
